With low-carb diets a huge fad in health and fitness, some nutritionists are risking the ire of the keto crowd by pointing out an inconvenient fact: a lack of carbs potentially damages the gut microbiome, which needs carbs such as bananas for prebiotics — the stuff that feeds the gut bacteria. Noted nutritionist Joanna McMillan points out that a lack of prebiotics will upset the balance in the gut and lead to an increased risk of inflammation, infections and autoimmune diseases.
