Get your body ready for the warm weather. Sarah Brooks-Wilson shows how to up your skincare game.
Now that spring has finally arrived, it’s time to start prepping your complexion for the rising temperatures and sticky humidity that lie ahead. That means putting aside your heavier winter skincare products and turning to your lighter warm weather regimen once more. Here are a number of ways you can stave off skin-related freak-outs with the change of season.

Make it your monthly beauty treat. A peel with LED light only takes 40 minutes, so you can be in and out in your lunch break. Go for a peel that’s part L-Lactic acid, part manual scrub, which is great for dull, ageing skin and congested pores. Add on LED light therapy and it will boost cellular activity, increase blood flow and promote collagen production, leaving your skin peachy again. Prices vary, so check with your favourite clinic.
Winter can cause a build-up of dead skin cells, leftover product and environmental toxins, which is why it’s important to exfoliate. A light scrub twice a week will help get rid of that old, dead winter skin. If you feel your complexion needs a little more, try swiping a peel pad with glycolic and salicylic acid over your face daily for a deeper refresh. ADD TO YOUR KIT: The Body Shop For Men Maca Root Face Scrub, $20.95, and Elizabeth Arden Pro Sensitive Skin Peel Pads, $82.
Kaye Scott from Sydney’s The Clinic says the best thing you can do for your skin is avoid overloading on product: “The most important steps are cleansing and moisturising, so if you only have the time to do two, these are your best options for good skin.” She recommends an everyday cleanser that’s powered by botanicals for a deep clean that soothes and calms. Then go for a moisturiser that’s full of antioxidants and peptides to repair and mop up free radicals. Pop on sunblock and you’re good to go. ADD TO YOUR KIT: Dermalogica PowerBright Pure Light SPF50, $97.
Research out of Germany has shown that infra-red rays and the heat they generate penetrate the dermal layers of the skin and stimulate the production of elastin-degrading enzymes. Unfortunately, this means a loss of skin firmness and wrinkle formation. But don’t panic — brands are now including infra-red protection in their sun care ranges for extra protection. ADD TO YOUR KIT: Swisse Natural Defence BB Cream SPF 30, $24.99.
Yes, it’s another beauty appliance, but you need to make an exception for a cleansing brush. It not only gives a deeper cleanse, but also gently exfoliates, unclogs pores and boosts circulation, leaving your complexion smooth and firm. Plus, it’s very easy to use with whatever cleanser you already have. Simply glide over your face in a circular motion and rinse. ADD TO YOUR KIT: Clarisonic Alpha Fit, $315.
All that squinting in the sun will take its toll on your eyes. To combat the fine lines and wrinkles that can form around them, find an eye cream with a high concentration of antioxidants and peptides. The duo work to ward off the collagen-destroying effects of UVA rays and plump up existing wrinkles. Of course, a pair of big sunnies is never a bad idea either. ADD TO YOUR KIT: Olay Eyes Ultimate Eye Cream, $48.99.
You’ve probably seen them on the shelves, but probably weren’t sure what they are and why you need them. While you should keep things simple, this is one step you should add. Essences are basically the new serums of skincare — you apply them after cleansing to deliver a whole host of goodies to the skin, such as brightening enzymes, vitamins and hydrating hyaluronic acid. They help boost radiance, reduce fine lines and improve dullness. Simply soak a cotton pad in the essence and wipe over your face daily after cleansing. ADD TO YOUR KIT: SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, $100 (75ml).
Including ageing preventative cryotherapy (the use of extreme cold) in your regimen will plump, brighten and instantly lift your skin. These treatment applications come in an ice cube infusion that incorporates actives to regenerate and stimulate the epidermis. Take them out of the freezer, insert into the muslin cloth and wipe over your face until it melts. It will certainly wake up your skin and give it that new-season boost. ADD TO YOUR KIT: Vanessa Megan Cryo Facelift Ice Cube Treatment, $159.95.
Not only are these skin wonders quick and easy to use, they also pack a powerful punch when it comes to skin regeneration, which is just what you need coming out of the cold. Look for hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to help repair and restore skin. Keep in the fridge for the ultimate skin cool-down. ADD TO YOUR KIT: Ella Baché Extreme Regeneration Masque, $78 for two.
