Exploring the great outdoors in Sri Lanka
The island of Sri Lanka is an underrated one-stop shop for adventure. Among its Buddhist temples, Muslim fishing villages and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, there are mountainous rock formations, towering waterfalls, forested trekking trails, diverse flora and fauna, spectacular beaches and welcoming locals. Diving is one activity gaining popularity, with many spots along the west coast promising abundant wildlife and shipwrecks to explore. Go further south and immerse yourself in the silence of the sea and the mesmerising beauty of its endless coral gardens. Rock climbing is the perfect complement to the country’s varied trekking routes. While tour companies cater to varying skill levels, you’ll need to muster your physicality for this experience. Go-to spots include Knuckles Range, Ella, Sigiriya, Buttala and Habarana. Adam’s Peak in Sri Pada is known as a holy mountain because when the peak is reached, a mystic shadow appears on the plains below. If you’re after something more extreme, waterfall climbing on the towering Bambarakanda Waterfall will definitely challenge you!
