If you want to prevent a hangover you should try eating pears before you drink.
The CSIRO has discovered that the Korean variety of pear (which looks similar to a Nashi pear) can dramatically reduce hangover severity and lower blood alcohol levels.
The lead researcher on the project, Professor Manny Noakes, said the anti-hangover effect has been detected in subjects consuming 220ml of Korean pear juice before a few drinks.
Prof. Noakes said there may be several ways by which pears prevent hangovers, such as by speeding up the key enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism to eliminate or inhibit alcohol absorption. “In particular, reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for the hangover symptoms,” she said.
Professor Noakes added that the pears reduced hangovers only if consumed before drinking alcohol.
